Smooth transitions between case sections
5 min read

In a case interview, how you move between sections matters. Smooth transitions signal that you’re in control of the flow and thinking ahead. Choppy or abrupt jumps can make even a strong case feel disjointed.

This article gives you practical phrases and strategies to transition clearly and confidently between key parts of your case.

1. Transition from Clarifying to Structure

Once you've asked your clarifying questions and confirmed the objective, transition into your framework with purpose.

“Thanks, that helps. To approach this problem, I’d like to break it down into three areas…”

2. Transition from Structure to Deep Dive

After presenting your framework, choose where to begin. Don’t just dive in—signpost your choice.

“Let’s start with the revenue side first, since that’s likely the biggest driver of the issue.”

3. Transition Between Branches

As you complete analysis on one branch of your structure, summarize and pivot to the next.

“So we’ve ruled out pricing as a major issue. Now let’s explore volume trends to see if that explains the decline.”

4. Transition into Math or Exhibit Analysis

When the interviewer gives you data, frame how you’ll approach it.

“I’d like to walk through this chart starting from revenue, then work down the cost structure to identify margin pressure.”

5. Transition into Synthesis

After exploring all the branches, bring it back together clearly.

“Based on the data, the main driver of the profitability drop is higher fixed costs post-expansion. I’d recommend consolidating underperforming locations.”

Final Thoughts

Think of your case like a story. Every shift — from structure to math to final recommendation — should feel intentional and logical.

Use transitions to guide the listener and show that you’re not just solving a case — you’re telling a coherent story.
